A Transient Life
by Blindspot Gallery
Location: Blindspot Gallery
Artist(s): CHEUNG Hong-sang, Enoch, Kurt TONG, Siu Nam, South HO
Date: 15 Dec 2010 - 19 Jan 2011

Blindspot Gallery is pleased to present “A Transient Life” exhibiting photographic artworks by three Hong Kong artists, Kurt Tong, South Ho, and Enoch Cheung. The artists explore respectively how man’s mind and value, nature and physical environment transform beyond our control with the passing of time. Their artworks capture the brevity and the transient nature of life.

Kurt Tong’s series, Memories, Dreams; Interrupted and In Case it Rains in Heaven are contrasting in style, yet both related to the passing of time. In Memories, Dreams; Interrupted, Tong captured images of natural scenery at a park where his memories with his daughters were created. The fogged vision on the images reflects the fading state of memories. In In Case it Rains in Heaven, a series of joss paper offerings were photographed in studio setting prior burning for his deceased grandmother as a filial memorial. Joss paper items are getting more elaborate in the past decades, many ‘new items’ such as neck massager and karaoke machine are available. The selection of objects to be made into joss paper offerings reflects people’s changing values and consumer culture, as well as a desire for a continuation of the existing life.

South Ho’s Impermanence questions about eternity and explores the relationship between impermanence and eternity. This series is a set of photographs of the ever-‐transforming colors of the sky. Some photographs in the series were captured when the artist was encountering some important moments in his life. The changing of the colors is a metaphor of how Ho perceives life; as change of nature is always beyond our control, just as change in our lives. He realizes the only real constant in life is the change itself. Ho is one of the winners of the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Biennial Awards 2009 with his Into Light series.

Enoch Cheung’s two photographic mixed-‐media works, West Kowloon Walled City and Sedimentation, explore the constantly and rapidly changing cityscape and coastline in the city. In the West Kowloon Walled City, the densely populated luxury residential buildings situated at the West Kowloon recall a familiar scene once existed until the early 90s in the darkest part of Kowloon; while Sedimentation forecasts the new geographical landmark settled in the West Kowloon. West Kowloon Walled City was one of the nominated artworks of the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Biennial Awards 2009.

All three artists, Kurt Tong , South Ho and Enoch Cheung despite of having different subject matters in their works, define the transient nature of life through their personal views and experiences.
