Time Traveler
by Espace Louis Vuitton Hong Kong
Location: Espace Louis Vuitton Hong Kong
Artist(s): AU Hoi Lam, Sara TSE
Date: 24 Jan - 1 Apr 2014

Espace Louis Vuitton Hong Kong proudly presents Time Traveler – a jointly conceived exhibition by Hong Kong artists Au Hoi Lam and Sara Tse. The show modulates feminine sensibilities, with the artworks cumulating to a gentle crescendo of sensitivity and empathy. Encouraging the audience to travel through time and space, the exhibition explores the psychological spectrum that lies between the real and imagined.

Time Traveler is the second dual exhibition of Au and Tse’s art works, and continues to contemplate the feminine in contemporary art. The artists refuse to reference the archetypal image of the female, instead, creating metaphorical stories that encapsulate the feminine, embracing the intuition of sensuality and the playfulness of spirits. Exploring simple memories, the artists instinctively create a continuous dialogue with the audience – transporting them through time and space.

A tenant of modern philosophy is whether or not time and space exist independently of the mind. Through a new series of works, Au Hoi Lam explores this question by presenting a mental space that is bound neither by physicality nor the passing of time. Throughout the show, the paintings, installations and mixed media works poetically depict a timeless continuum. An installation of mirrors places the viewer in a metaphorical natural scene whilst paintings of clock faces with missing hands create opportunities for psychological travel. Au creates a temporal vision of imaginary spaces that is not hindered by the mundane concerns of empirical reality.

By contrast, Sara Tse allows for time travel by using visual cues that are tied to a specific time and place. Tse casts domestic objects in creamy white porcelain occasioning her sculptures to retain the lingering echoes of the original. An alchemist, Tse captures soft objects as permanent solid sculptures, concurrently concretising personal histories which all form part of the fabric of human stories. The juxtaposition of diametric opposites; real and created, soft and hard, warm and cold in Tse’s careful installations challenge the very perceptions of fiction and truth, reality and imagination.

The Espace Louis Vuitton exhibition contributes to the canon of the feminine in contemporary art, concurrently developing new conceptual strategies for representations. Creating an embracing experience for the audience, Au and Tse temper on the notions of permanence and impermanence to connect with their viewers. The sensuous elegance of the exhibits allow for graceful journeys that voyage through scripted stories, captivating realms, and instinctive enlightenment.
