Winter Sonata: Snow Ink Painting
by Sino Group's 'Art in Hong Kong'
Location: Central Plaza
Artist(s): LIU Guo Song
Date: 9 Jan - 22 Feb 2010

Imagine if some day people could only reminisce about scenes of a snowy icy world through art, where will our planet be? The issues on the table in Copenhagen are for everyone on earth. We should love our environment, as nature is one of our sources of inspiration.

Many artists are intrigued by the theme ‘snow’ because of its grandeur, serenity, sublimity and immaculate beauty. Sino Group’s ‘Art in Hong Kong’ is delighted to present ‘Winter Sonata: Snow Ink Painting’, which brings together four renowned international modern ink masters, namely Liu Guosong, Chan Shing Kau, Chan Kwan Lap, Bai Hai, and reveals their inspiring and diverse styles. ’The exhibition showcases superb snowy landscapes newly depicted by the four artists in 2009.

Liu Guosong coined the phrase "modern Chinese ink painting" in the early 1960s during his active involvement in the movement. As a pioneer, Liu influenced generations of artists far and wide. Chu-tsing Li said that Liu pushed the modern ink painting movement in Hong Kong in the 1970s and made it a new cultural force. His keen followers Chan Kwan Lap and Chan Shing Kau have also emerged as important figures in the city's art scene. Through decades of ink experimentation and innovation, they have developed a unique style with their own artistic vocabulary. Mainland painter Bai Hai who works and lives in Changchun, Jilin, is particularly noted for his fascinating snow painting with wonderful frosty trees. He has devoted himself to inventing his own style of ink painting since the 1980s.

The influence of Liu Guosong has gone far beyond territorial and cultural boundaries. His art has dictated some noticeable characteristics in contemporary works that express a strong sense of awareness of the diverse cultural trends of today. Contemporary works, such as the paintings on display, should carry an aesthetic value as well as a message of concern for the welfare of our planet.
