We see a man painted with violent colors. He’s kneeling down on one knee as he paints. The air surrounding him is filled with so much tension that it looks as if he’s ready to jump into an emotional sprint. This is how artist Suh Yong Sun describes himself as an artist.
He is often considered as an artist of history painting, as he's been working on the tragic stories of Danjong* since 20 years. However quite a volume of his wo...rks are on regular urbanites in different cities. Critic Chung Young Mok said, "he talks about the humanities not with the language but with visual images. The narratives are, in the end, the artist's gaze upon 'humans'."
On the other hand, the visual expressions are so strong that they force the viewers to conceive the scene in the painting as current events. They can’t stare at his works without being disturbed.
The exhibition also includes scenery paintings of different sites in Korea, associated historic events. For Suh, art bears liability of humanities than pursuing mere aesthetic expressions. His statements are even more convincing as his early works 'pinetree' series are realism masterpieces.
His works are collected by different museums in Asia.
He had been appointed as 'The artist of the year' in 2009 by National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea.
