Thorus & Roses
by Shin Hwa Gallery
Location: Shin Hwa Gallery
Artist(s): Violet SHUM
Date: 26 Mar - 17 Apr 2010

LOVE is the thing. Artist Violet Shum thinks that 'Rose' is the kind of flower that has a strong symbolic meaning of love. In this exhibition, she uses her roses to bring out the balance of life. She uses a very special medium, stainless steel wire to create all her roses. Shum conceptually plays with her medium leading different kind of perspectives for us, the audiences, to ponder over her artworks. With a large stainless steel rose, Shum is trying to catch the moment of the full blossom rose; she attempts to keep this most glorious moment forever. With numerous of smaller roses filling up a whole wall, it gives a different impact and a story about forgiveness. In fact, the roses appear soft and beautiful, yet it is very firm and thorny. Ironically, in life, certain things are not what they seem; it is just a matter of how you look at it.
