All My Newborns
by iPRECIATION Hong Kong
Location: iPRECIATION Hong Kong
Artist(s): TOMITA Natsumi
Date: 22 Nov - 15 Dec 2012

iPRECIATION Hong Kong is delighted to present ‘All My Newborns’, a solo exhibition of new works by Japanese artist Tomita Natsumi. Having grown up in the world’s foremost industrialised capital of Japan, Natsumi has initiated a rectification of recycled materials. Born in Tokyo in 1986, Natsumi is trained in oil painting at Tama University, one of Japan’s leading art universities, graduated in 2007. At the age of 21, Natsumi has started her promising artistic career, witnessing several solo and group exhibitions to date. Her works have been publicly collected by the Hamada Children’s Museum of Art in Shimane, Japan as well as private collectors in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, United States and Europe.

Natsumi assembles constituents of various scrapes into beautiful and amusing creatures that share eccentric semblances with their real-life counterparts. Her creations are brilliant in its facility for utilising art as a bridge to promote environmental awareness. The vibrant potpourri of wildlife species is paradoxically emulated via the odd scraps of material that evokes a sentiment of childish enthusiasm amongst viewers, whilst furthering a creative expansion amongst her audiences. Her human sculptures, composed by abandoned newspaper and magazines, suggest a sense of frailty and lightness in these sculptures. It connotes the insinuation of the fragility of human race in the age of over-consumption.
