‘Kiss with a seal’
Stage 1 proudly presents Sum Wing Man’s first solo exhibition: ‘Kiss with a seal’
Sum works around the theme of secrets and truth behind the surface through a series of photographs and installations. Sum hereby implements elements from Chinese craft such as the seal and seal engraving, used in a contemporary way.
Sum’s artwork consists of a series of photographs and installations. The pictures are self-portraits of the artist marked with seal imprints over various parts of her face and upper body. The installation shows a group of empty bottles containing sealed letters while folded letters in paper planes fly across the room. These modern elements mixed with Chinese craft refer to hidden secrets behind the seal, there to be found, discovered and unfold. Empty speaking bubbles are unexplained. What’s the story? Is there a story? And who is it meant for? It’s for the viewer to guess.
Sum is a fresh graduate from the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University.
This exhibition is the first step in Sum’s adventurous career in the art world. She is herself still looking for answers and trying to find her direction in life.
