‘Subject to Change’ a debut exhibition on interactive/kinetic art by Samuel Adam Swope
by Blue Lotus Gallery
Location: G/43 Art Space, Blue Lotus Gallery
Date: 5 Oct - 30 Nov 2008

The mission of Blue Lotus Gallery’s new program within another existing space, G/F RM/43 Wah Luen, Fo Tan, Sha Tin District, HK, is simple. It is a space for any artist. The theme of the space is ‘my art, my space, my ideas’ ‘just return the space how you found it’. The space is an alternative space with an unlimited amount of alternatives and possibilities. The space will survive based on the artist’s driven desire to create and exhibit. There are very little criteria and only one statute. All artists have the potential to explore, develop, or stay continuous. Therefore, Blue Lotus Gallery is pleased to provide all artists the opportunity to exhibit ‘your art, your ideas, in your space’.

Solo-Exhibition by Samuel Adam Swope
Hong Kong, especially in Fo Tan, is a platform for many experimenting and already established artist. Hong Kong, regarding art, has the potential for grandeur. Within this exhibition, Samuel would like to exemplify this very potential.

The space consists of two levels. For this exhibition Samuel’s work will make use of both levels. The work, as he visions it, will be a relationship between space, time, object, and the viewers. The works of art will be sensitive to the viewer. They will be dependent and be completed by the viewer’s presence. The viewer’s presence will allow the once potential works of art to become kinetic works of art.
Descriptive words that may assist the exhibition are; mysterious, dream-like, metaphysical, potentiality, physical, potential energy, kinetic energy, magical, and attic hideaway.

The description of the relationship between the space, object, time, and the viewer is as follows: (From beginning to end).
The ground floor, upon entry, will be darkly lit (possible that the atmosphere may be slightly hazy). A spot light will illuminate the newly installed lift to the upper level. The ambience on the ground floor should be that of a tenebrous painting by Caravaggio. (the beginning’’).
The upper level, upon entry, will be warmly lit. There is only one direction to go. The path that is followed will be narrow spaces, slightly resembling that of a maze. Along the narrow spaces/path are columns/stands that contain shallow bodies of water.
Though the bodies of water shall be camouflaged with the material and form it rests on. Hanging above each body of water will be a ‘water droplet dispensing device’ that is crafted with emphasis on aesthetically attractive. As the viewer progresses down the narrow spaces so will the occurrences of ripples in the bodies of water. The rippling will occur at the very moment the viewer walks past. (the body/middle)
At the end of the narrow spaces will be a small room in which a small white box rests on a stand. The small white box is inside a glass box. When the viewer approaches the white box and is near it will slowly open revealing its internal mechanism. Once fully open the box will release smoke. After the glass box fills with smoke, and the white box is no longer visible, the smoke will be sucked out and released by the viewers’ feet, only to reveal that the white box is closed. The actions shall be kept as silent as possible. (the climax, the conclusion, the end)
