Artist Statement

“Hong Kong is a dynamic hectic metropolis, it’s a place full of tension. We constantly rush and hurry. Trying to escape, longing for freedom, I picture myself as a bird and the story begins with the bird gaining a wing to fly away.”

The story is told by a series of small intimate pencil drawings. The series can be further divided in pairs. The first drawing depicts the beautiful illusion juxtaposed to the second more brutal reality. The drawings are minimal and only take a small corner of the canvas; this subtlety enhances the fragile nature of this poetic narrative.

The “ Forlorn Hope” will be Cheung’s first solo show in Hong Kong at Stage 1/Blue Lotus Gallery.
