In Clover (2008) by Cornelia ERDMANN

Stainless Steel

To live In Clover, in ease and luxury – a nature scene of Lala-Land is a an early suggestion of spring to come. The wall installation is inspired by Chinese ink painting of nature scenes that depict nature scenes of vegetation and live animal, composed with rich details and vacant spaces to an exciting aesthetic.

Various insects buzz around a tree, all cut from stainless steel sheet. The tree-like leaves entwine along the wall as a 2D object that is revived by its surroundings. The shiny mirroring metal leaves catch all light, colour and movement in the space. At the same time they reflect a delicate floral pattern of light onto the ground.

Three dimensional butterflies, beetles and dragonflies buzz between the exuberant leaves. Cut also from stainless steel they exist only in halves, one half of their body and one wing. The insects only come to their complete lives with their bodies' reflections of light and shadow. Thus, the threefold of the insects' shapes from metal, light and shadow will create an illusion as if they are alive and actually buzz between the leaves.
