Gloria NG biography | artworks | events

After completing a fine arts degree at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Gloria Ng made her way from pure art to making functional pieces which can be put on the body for adornment. The influence of conceptual art remains strong and is very much evident in these pieces. Starting as an amateur, she decided to move forward within this practice. In 2006, trying to pursue a career in jewelry art, she enrolled into the design course offered by the University for the Creative Arts in Kent, UK, for its emphasis on exploring the relationship between disciplines and rethinking the boundaries between them. This allowed Gloria to investigate within the disciplines of jewelry, fashion and architecture and to question the definition of art, craft and design. With her project, Conceptual Craft: Body architecture across the gender boundaries, she was awarded a Master of Arts in Design in 2007.

After graduation, she gained valuable experience from the internship at Comfort Station, a London-based jewelry brand with stockists from cities such as Paris, Barcelona, Istanbul, Seoul and Hong Kong.  Currently she is developing her own brand: ‘Insinuo’, which aims to express her concepts and visualization through her designs. For her, jewelry is an intimate study of the body. Making jewelry means playing with the spaces around the body. She is particularly curious about things that would catch the attention of both genders. She sees her works as artifacts that are androgynous in style and will trigger a growing ambiguity within the preconceived gender boundaries, creating a beautiful paradox which oscillates between the two sexes.

Her work has recently been shown in the International Designer Arena at the Hong Kong International Jewelry Manufacturers’ Show and is featured in the showcase of the University for the Creative Arts’ website. Gloria currently lives and works in Hong Kong and London.
