Christian Knowles was born in Saint Asaph, north Wales. After learning the creative basics of photography with an ex-Fleet Street snapper, he worked as an expedition photographer in Africa.
Having gained a Degree from the University of Gloucestershire, he went on to work in Spain, where he held his first solo exhibition. Much travelled, Christian has since returned to the UK, where his work has been shown widely, most notably with the Royal Photographic Society sponsored Britain-on-Sea exhibition that toured the country for over 2 years.
Journeys play an important role in Christian’s work, they offer him an opportunity to step outside the comfort zone of day to day existence. Searching for images in unfamiliar surroundings, Christian feels part hunter and part prey. This is the driving force behind his raison d’etre.
Walkabout was inspired by the musings of Bruce Chatwin in his book The Songlines about the nomadic life of Australia’s indigenous population. Walkabout is the term given to the spiritual journey made by adolescent male Aborigines where they live in the wilderness for as long as six months. Whilst undertaking this project Christian noted the empathy that many white Australians feel towards this cultural rite of passage, and how many engage in a similar journey.
Christian currently lives in Devon, England with his wife and young daughter, where he supplements on going projects with lecturing in Photography. He has recently completed a photo shoot in Hong Kong.
