Mark SPAIN biography | artworks | events

As an award-winning figurative artist, Mark Spain started out with as a landscape painter and a print maker while later turned into a successful figurative painter fascinated with the female image. Mark has always been interested in art right from an early age. After having attended Art College, he favoured printmaking and opened up a print making studio in Kent where he spent many years developing his etching and collagraph techniques. His collagraphs have been exhibited at Mall Galleries, and my abstract oils at the 20th Century British Art Fair as well as other works being shown at the Chelsea and Hampton Court Flower Show and the Barbican Contemporary Print Fair.

Mark observed women and his distinctive vision reveal rigour, passion, tenderness, eroticism, drama or everyday life. Mark’s interest in music allows him to capture a moment in life with mood and feeling. Mark's work has been exhibited in galleries all over the UK and can be found in private collections round the world including Spain, Belgium, France, New Zealand, Australia, Holland, Hong Kong, Japan, USA and Canada.

Speaking about his own works, Mark comments, "Having experimented with many forms of imagery in recent years, figurative work has been the most challenging and satisfying. My main goals are always to create a certain amount of movement within the image, with particular emphasis on setting a mood and atmosphere. I would like the viewer to be intrigued as to the possible thoughts of the subject, which can only add to the effect of the picture. Pictures I believe must have a life of their own to allow an ongoing interest."
