In conjunction with Connoisseur Art Gallery, 82 Republic holds a solo exhibition of its youngest contemporary Chinese artist, WAN Yang, in two gallery spaces – Connoisseur Art Gallery and Connoisseur Contemporary this November. Born in 1983 in Hunan, China, WAN is the youngest in Connoisseur Contemporary’s stable of new and emerging art stars, but his art works are by no means amateurish. Since he started his artistic career with 82 Republic he has proven his artistic and technical prowess for an artist in his generation; in a short span of less than two years and has had his works showcased in Art Taipei and Art Singapore in 2007 and ShContemporary in Shanghai and KIAF in Seoul in September this year.
From painting single-themed paintings of colourful self-designed board games with lovable, cartoon-like characters, he has evolved to creating works that show his maturity as an artist through the minimal but ingenious employment of colours to create depth and dimension to a painting. Wan’s works show a simple, original idea can be sculpted into beautiful artworks on canvas, and this long-awaited solo exhibition reflects the maturing process of WAN as a young artist – his artistic journey and development over the past year.
