New York-based Chinese artist O Zhang portrays complex issues of cultural identity, transplantation and gender in her photographic works, which are at once ambivalent, sincere and intriguing.

She creates striking and emotionally intelligent images that investigate the essence of Chinese culture through the lens of an outsider. Hers is a vision of a great nation at the crossroads of history, a space where personal and public dramas conflict and intertwine.

Ooi Botos will be presenting two series of her works: Daddy and I, which deals with the many-faceted relationship between American Chinese daughters and their Western adoptive fathers; and The World is Yours (But Also Ours), which raises pertinent questions about wider issues, using the linguistic gap between image and text to comment upon the traditions and initiatives of the past and a hope for the future.

O Zhang was the recipient of the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center Artist Fellowship, Wilson Centre for Photography Fellowship and Fuji Film Student Awards, winner of RCA Photography Graduate Award, and nominated/shortlisted for numerous awards including Chinese Contemporary Art Awards, Beck's Future's Contemporary Art Prize, Creative Capital Awards and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Biennial Award.

She has had solo exhibitions in New York, Philadelphia, Istanbul, London, Manchester and Beijing, and her work has been included in notable group shows (such as international travelling exhibition Mahjong: Contemporary Chinese Art from the Sigg Collection) throughout Europe, America and China, including the Kunsthalle Museum, Hamburg; the Museum of Modern Art, Salzburg; Kunstmuseum Bern; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai, and is in the collections of the Guggenheim Museum, Santa Barbara Museum, Uli Sigg Art Collection, and other private collections.
