"Excuse me, where is the market?"
by Red Elation Gallery
Location: Red Elation Gallery
Artist(s): GROUP SHOW
Date: 24 Aug - 21 Sep 2013

A recent trend is to routinely put the word "community" on top of arts pieces to give them a "glowing aura". We hope however that the artists' abstracted emotions about "community" can be expressed directly. Red Elation Gallery asked selected artists, "Excuse me, where is the market?", in order to investigate our living style, materialistic culture and the variety of people around us. Through this exhibition, finally, you will understand "those are ours, I know the answer".

Red Elation Gallery invited five young, local artists to express their ideas on the local market. Wong Tin Yan, after observing the evanescing craftsmanship in the community, partnered with a master in making traditional wooden chairs and created pieces that feature funny appearances through traditional craftsmanship. Intending to maintain the disappearing "market", Wong Ka Wing took a series of abstracted photographs to reveal unseen values of the local market.

Vivian Ho discovered "fresh" materials for her paintings. For her, the red blood in local markets should not be gory for buyers, but an index of freshness and hence reflect the price of meat. Roy Ng was inspired by the buyer-seller relationship and created a machine made of daily items, to express our pace of living. KACAMA, the designer team, collected excess materials from the community and turned them into unique and simple household items. These items will be presented to audiences interactively in the exhibition.
