Sino Group’s ‘Art in Hong Kong’ presents ‘Songs of the City: Works by Mary Ma’ – A visual analogy to a complex and energetic symphony dedicated to Hong Kong
(29 September 2009) Every city has its unique sound, smell and colour. A Hong Kong native, oil painter Mary Ma finds that the colour and rhythm of Hong Kong are quite different from the world’s other big cities. She aims to capture Hong Kong’s unique features with lines, forms and colours by composing a series of visual songs. It is like performing a complex and energetic symphony.
Mary Ma is a veteran local painter who has participated in many joint exhibitions since the 1990s. She is fond of using vivid colours, forms and shapes in her paintings to express her unique perception of Hong Kong, the place where she was born, brought and educated. The non-figurative and organic forms in her paintings symbolise the vibrancy and complexity of a metropolitan city. Mary also uses a slightly darker palette and a more serious style in some of her paintings to reflect her contemplation of a fast growing city.
Sino Group’s ‘Art in Hong Kong’ presents ‘Songs of the City: Works by Mary Ma’, which showcases 24 thought provoking works depicting metropolitan Hong Kong. Regardless of how audiences react to her work, only a vibrant city like Hong Kong could inspire these unique songs.
