Journey to the West
by Central Plaza
Location: 1/F Lobby, Central Plaza, 18 Harbour Road, Wan Chai
Artist(s): WONG Sau-ching
Date: 17 Mar - 15 May 2011

Many people are fascinated by the Western Regions for the fantasies covered under a veil of mystery. The music of Kitaro, Dadawa and Sa Dingding may remind us of the Western Regions. We may also catch a glimpse of its breathtaking landscape in photographs and movies. However, in the ‘Journey to the West’ exhibition, we will see a subtle and poetic portrayal of the Western Regions by veteran local artist Wong Sau Ching. Sino Group’s ‘Art in Hong Kong’ is delighted to present ‘Journey to the West – Works by Wong Sau Ching’, an exhibition that showcases 25 artworks under the theme of the Western Regions.

Renowned artist participated in World Expo 2010 Shanghai China
Wong Sau Ching was born in Fujian, China in 1954. In 1992, he graduated from Wimbledon School of Art, London. Two years later, he became tutor of Hong Kong Visual Art Centre. In 2001, he was appointed as a board member of Artist Commune and the Chairperson of Res Artist (China). He has participated in many exhibitions both in China and overseas, including ‘L΄ Art Dans Le Monde 2000’ organised by Les Musées De La Ville De Paris and ‘Legacy and Creations – Ink Art vs Ink Art’ in World Expo 2010 Shanghai China. Public art commissions include two wall paintings at the MTR Central Station and Quarry Bay Station – ‘Outside and Inside Window’ and ‘The Way to Home’.

Enchanting and inspiring
The Western Regions has enchanted many travelers, photographers, movie producers, authors and artists since long. The place has inspired them in a profound way and Wong is no exception. He has been visiting the Western Regions since the nineties of the century, including Jokhang Temple on Barkor Street in Lhasa, Litang, Ngari, Guge and more. He used to keep track of the journeys by writings, sketches and photographs, which became his precious memories and essential reference conducive to the creation of the West Regions series. In this exhibition, all exhibits are selected from Wong’s latest collection unrevealed before, among which ‘Impression of Autumn in Tibet’ blends Chinese ink with western medium pastel to bring about a vibrant palette that represents the vivid colours of autumn in Tibet, whereas ‘My Dream of Guge’ reminds us of the grandeur of the ancient and legendary Guge Empire. All in all, the East and West, history and modernity are intertwined in a subtle and charming way.

Visual feast complemented by audio pleasure
To complement the exhibition, musicians from Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra are invited to perform folk music of Tibet and Xinjiang during the exhibition period. Details on the programme will be announced soon.

Inspired by the concept of travelogue, ‘Art in Hong Kong’ has published an exquisitely designed catalogue for this exhibition. Please contact us for a free copy.
