Rezzak Coiffure
by agnès b.'s Librairie Galerie
Location: agnès b.’s Librairie Galerie
Artist(s): Franck REZZAK
Date: 22 Jan - 7 May 2011

"Rezzak Coiffure" is the first chapter of the “REZZAK BEAUTY INSTITUTE” project, which is about trans-humanity by the French Artist, Franck Rezzak. In Hong Kong, the exhibition presents simple beauty and transformation by hair styling, a simple way of transformation and rechange.

The exhibition prolongs itself by addressing plastic surgery and nanotechnologies. The new technology comes to the world and path the way for body transformation, and also change our future life.

A total of 27 paintings, sculptures and interactive installations are displayed in agnès b.’s LIBRAIRIE GALERIE in Hong Kong.

The concept
“For several years now, I’ve been working on a project “REZZAK BEAUTY INSTITUTE” which consists in occupying a space under the theme of eternal youth. This space would comprise three installations: the “plastic surgery room”, the “complements bar”, and the “hair salon”. I would like to start working on the hair salon “Rezzak Coiffure”. The vast question of the relation to beauty and to youth (which have now become equivalent) is crucially formulated in our society while remaining taboo. Science has found a technical solution to this ontological problem: surgery renamed “plastic surgery” and other anti-aging processes. While hybrid creatures, monsters and other mythical creatures have always been a favourite theme and, today, manipulation of the living has brought them into a reality which sometimes surpasses fiction. Art is at the core of this debate which questions the being through its idealistic or monstrous representation and it must participate consciously”.

About Franck Rezzak
With his drawings, Franck Rezzak revitalises archaic practices. Inspired by antique frescos, mural paintings or rock art, his work intertwines an attention to detail with an elegance of stroke, creating patterns that play on perception as well as on symbolism. With out any narrative intention, his work doesn’t guide towards a particular interpretation or understanding.  On the contrary, behind these closed doors the spectator’s gaze cannot stay put: it loses contact, lingers or flees.

The graphic construction relies on a “free association” of the different elements from which emerges an incongruous and erratic drama. Hybrid beings and bizarre animals populate this shattered world, a place fused with signs and forms, where the organic coexists with the geometric. In this proliferation of references and significance, the meaning is created more through the spectator himself, rather than imposed on him.

Background Music by Jim
In this exhibition, background music and sound effects are specially made by Jim. Jim is from another dimension. Creating landscapes and audio-sceneries inspired by the 70s and 80s, the cut-up technique, video clips, and the elements of the present that surround, fascinate or profoundly disgust him. Frustrated by not knowing where he comes from and why he was put here, he tries to approach Chaos by generating heaps (ou a fuckload si t as le droit de jurer) of noise, sounds, images and visions located outside of the realms of reality.

The fiction which overflows with noise and overlapping with surprises is Rezzak Coiffure.
