A is Green, R is Red
by agnès b.'s Librairie Galerie
Location: agnès b.'s Librairie Galerie
Artist(s): Lio YEUNG
Date: 15 Oct - 31 Dec 2011

This time, agnès b.'s Librairie Galerie introduces a local artist, Lio Yeung, to you. In the exhibition, Lio presents his works in various media which offer an alternative way to understand the world that we are facing every day. Mixed media includes drawing, sculpture, neon light installation and ultraviolet light drawing.

Concept of the exhibition
While you are reading this press release, probably the background is in white and the letters are in black. But for people with Synesthesia, alphabets are perceived with specific colours. The title of the exhibition “A is Green R is Red” implies an alternative way of seeing the world.

In communication basis, we assume that everyone sees the same, so that we share and discuss the emotion and perception of the world derived from what we see. The assumption also leads us to the debate of the meaning of beauty. The Egyptian explored the two dimension of wall painting while artist in Renaissance developed linear perspective. However, if everyone doesn’t sees the world in the same way, are there any ground for us to discuss “the meaning of beauty”?

We are experiencing a world with the word ‘now’ in it, which has been constructed by complex system largely generated by data from our senses. We are unaware of things that we cannot sense. By creating an imaginative journey to the visual worlds of others, Lio invites audiences to see outside of the box and question the difference between the actual world and the world we perceive.

Description of the exhibition
Based on Mitchell’s (W. J. T. Mitchell) concept of portrait, portraits want to be seen and demand recognition. Portrait itself, apart from the intentions of the artists or subjects, says, “Look at me and see who I am”. Lio Yeung thus creates 50 portraits of different characters with their unique ways of seeing and invites audiences to discover their stories. His works are inspired by scientific researches of visual disorders and artists he met during the journey to Europe.

He worked closely with his beloved friends, Dadababy K, Sing Chin lo , Kaon , Camille Wong and Luka So to reflect his thoughts in drawings, collages, sculptures, photography, installations, and even in fashion items. With the influence of surrealism and Bauhaus design, his works are full of imagination, exaggeration and unexpected juxtapositions.

About Lio Yeung
Lio Yeung (www.illllio.com) was graduated in BA (Hons) in Visual Communications in Hong Kong. He has worked as a senior art director in advertising for 6 years for Leo Burnett, Grey and JWT. Being a good observer in life, Lio tries to explore the millions possibilities of a single object that derived from different people.
