Until quite recently,Vietnam was a largely rural nation, subsistence farming the norm rather than the exception. With the 1986 introduction of Doi Moi reform policy and the resulting explosive urbanization, the landscape has changed. Yet, most Vietnamese have strong roots back to the small hamlets, farming and fishing villages dotting the nation. Surrounded by the noise and chaos in the cities, there is a strong sense that something incredibly valuable is rapidly being lost: A sense of community, which kinder ways of living and lives being shared. Both old masters like Phai and Kiem and next generations like Phong and Katy capture the essence and spirit of this way of life, brought together in “Hamlets of Vietnam”.
