KI’I POHAKU, Mysterious Hawaiian Petroglyphs in Modern Art
by Arch Angel Art Gallery
Location: Arch Angel Art Gallery
Artist(s): LEO Tam Sing Tracy
Date: 4 Nov - 30 Nov 2011

Through a chance encounter with Tracy, then living in Hong Kong, we were introduced to the mysterious stone carvings of Hawaii. Prior to the introduction of written language by missionaries in the 1820’s, Hawaiians found ways to record special events, daily activities and travels of their people through these mysterious markings.

They inspired Tracy to do a series of paintings and the symbols and images within these are directly based upon these ancient and historic engravings. Every image and symbol tells a tale, illustrating the daily activities, travels, births, deaths and celebrations in the lives of these people whose roots blossomed out of Hawaii’s mysterious past.

From “ Mahiki” (The Festival of Lono), to “The Sailing Canoe of Olowalu” to “To Stretch your Arms”, each painting draws one in, wondering, speculating as to the full meaning of these ancient symbols so powerfully painted by Tracy.

For sale in the exhibition are the unique original acrylic-on-canvas paintings. Giclee images (inkjet print generated from digital files, on canvas) in limited edition, individually signed by the artist, can also be ordered.
