Following Leung Chi Wo's exhibition in questioning the identity of Hong Kong as "Asia's World City", the Goethe-Institut Hongkong presents Hiram To's installation 'Garden District' from April 9 to May 7, 2009 at its Goethe-Gallery to further look into the topic of 'hybrid identities'. Born in Hong Kong, Hiram To was one of three artists representing Hong Kong at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007.
In Hiram To's Garden District, the artist explores the realm of nature and how it plays out in human and botanical spheres. Real-life characters with double identities collected from the mass media are layered with antique engravings of poisonous botanical life-forms, as well as blue-print diagrams of magicians' props - furniture and gadgets which define illusory spaces and interiors where upon the characters of Garden District reside.
The installation at the Goethe-Institut Hongkong includes new works on lithographic zinc plates and a 10 x 12 feet woven carpet, photography and ceramic pieces.
