Gallery EXIT presents “Life in the temporary,” Chris Huen Sin Kan’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.
Interested in recording the nuances and variety of dwelling in a place, paintings are for Huen an extension of quotidian life. His approach to this medium carries both the experiential immediacy of sketching and the presence of painting. Usually large in scale, the works stand out as occasional renderings of his unceasing mediations and constant tracings of his immediately perceptible surroundings.
For this exhibition Huen brings the viewer indoor, into his studio. Domestic views of hazed calmness and contended inertia develop through fast and direct brushstrokes. Emptied from all the unnecessary details, these incidental and prosaic scenes appear suspended in the threshold between events half remembered and half forgotten. In this timeless buoyancy, fugitive inhabitants surface from the unprimed raw canvas support. All things are depicted without a firm sense of hierarchy; the background and foreground, subject and object are fused into one wholesome vista.
