Pan Yue graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Art. Be it in painting or photography, he explores characters from traditional Chinese opera. He portrays them when they are out of character, but still in costume. His paintings are an acute observation of the lives of these people.
His photography however, take a different angle. While still maintaining costumes of opera singers, he places them out of context into compositions taking after old masters of the western tradition. From Manet to Piero della Francesca, Pan Yue is orientalising these famous works of art and imposing a 21st century contemporary Chinese male gaze on them.
