Movies and novels have been Xiao’s strong source of inspiration, with a slight hint of depression often depicted in her works. In her recent artworks, Xiao uses dog as the main narrator, painting it like a human being, which she explained as “painting ourselves”. Xiao chooses the image of a dog to replace human face so as to prevent repetitive recollection of a familiar face in our mind that can be a form of barrier to seeing the truth within her works. Intuition makes Xiao choose the image of dog, with round-eyed and speechless expressions to interpret the helpless situation of life, which one wonders whether one should bemoan or shriek.
