Yang Yi was born in Chongqing, Sichuan province, 1971. Before started photography, Yang Yi was a successful web designer. He is one of the most representative photographer from the Digital Generation.
Uprooted is Yang Yi's first series of photographic work. Based on his personal story, the work tells the last moments of the village where he was born, Kaixian, which has been entirely engulfed by waters from the Three Gorges dam in 2009, along with many others villages of the Three Gorges region in Sichuan Province, China.
Combining his photography with digital editing techniques, Yang Yi presents phantom villages submerged underwater. the few inhabitants of which, equipped with masks and snorkels, continue to live out their daily lives. No matter, Yang Yi seems to cry, "we will have it live on and even be reborn in our collective memories."
