Taiwanese artist, Polin Yang, is known for his sculptures of different media. In the recent years, he has created many renowned public artworks, including artworks for the Taipei Presidential Palace, Huashan Art District, Banquiao Train Station, Hsinchu Science Park, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts Park, and also for many university campuses and residential constructions. Different from traditional, academic, and any other school of styles, Polin Yang’s sculptures project a warm sense of earthiness, and also show profound concerns and raise awareness for nature, land, and humanity.
The artworks included in this exhibition, “Here I Am”, “Who Are You”, “International Visibility of Latitude 25 Longitude 121”, are three new pieces derived from the issues of “identity acceptance” and “land awareness”. The question of “who am I?” raises the ultimate question for the self.
The large soft sculpture of “Here I Am” is 15 meters high with the shape of Taiwan. Using inflatable device to fill the sculpture, the message the artist is creating is for Taiwan to “stand up”. In addition to highlighting Taiwan as a main subject and a symbolic presence, it intends to raise people’s awareness for this land and build mutual consciousness.
