First established in Singapore in 2002 as an event called the Month of Photography, the festival has evolved over the years to become a regionally positioned platform named Month of Photography Asia, celebrating and promoting photography both as an art and as a creative industry. It brings together internationally renowned photographers together with established and emerging photographers in Singapore and Southeast Asia.

Since its inception, the festival has always included a mixture of group shows (this is the case this year with “Requiem” coming from the George Eastman Museum, and the Shooting Home project in partnership with Objectifs Centre for Photography and Filmmaking) as well as solo shows (such as this year’s “Superhistory” by Indonesian artist Agan Arahap), as both approaches offer different perspectives on how to apprehend of photography.

Since 2004, the festival has been curated every year along a specific theme and, in relation to this theme, thus presenting a selection of works by some of the best international, regional and local photographers in line with this theme. After “Pop Culture” in 2004, “Le Regard documentaire” in 2006, “Wanderings” in 2007, “Still/Moving: Photography & Cinema” in 2008, “Engaging Asia” in 2009 and “Praxis” in 2010, this year’s theme is “Memory”.

It has also become a platform for bringing light to Singapore-based emerging talents first via the Out of Focus series which ran from 2006 to 2009, and then this year via the Shooting Home project. 2010 also saw the launch of the Icon de Martell Cordon Bleu Photography Award, honouring Singapore-based photographers who, through consistent practice and original vision, have created an important body of work, a partnership that the festival is proud to continue in 2011.

In doing all this, Month of Photography Asia has over the years become a leading photography event in Singapore, offering the general audience as well as photography amateurs and professionals an opportunity to discover exciting new images as well as to enjoy iconic classic works that have become part of the history of photography.

The festival is organized by Phish Communications, and is made possible by its valued sponsors, partners, supporters and friends.
