Illusions - Exhibition of Crossover Jadeite Artworks by Wang Junyi
Artist(s): WANG Junyi
Date: 31 Oct 2012 - 1 Feb 2013
Wang Junyi adds a unique contemporary aesthetic perspective to ancient Chinese jade art with his crossover artwork Icy Butterfly. It is the first prominent work addressing the themes of eco-friendly lifestyle and environmental protection in the history of jade carving.
The work, on which Wang spent fi ve years, features an unconventional, bold design by combining two distinct raw materials--titanium and 30 kg of premium icy jadeite. Two-dimensional images of the world’s fi ve continents are carved into the shell of a hollow titanium egg 1.3 meters in diameter, making a dancing butterfl y sculpture visible inside. Contemporary artistic concepts are innovatively incorporated into the design of the exquisite piece.
Its surface elicits an image of melting ice, symbolizes the collapse of a perfect world as well as hope after the catastrophe. Its visual impact can be compared to British artist Damien Hirst’s sculpture For the Love of God.
During the exhibition, Wang’s other masterpieces will also be on display.
