Madison Avenue no Rirekisho - Jidai wo Tsukutta Otoko to Onna
Date: 30 Jul - 3 Oct 2010

It is a great pleasure for the Yoshida Hideo Memorial Foundation to present “Madison Avenue no Rirekisho—Jidai wo Tsukutta Otoko to Onna” exhibition at the Ad Museum Tokyo, as the museum’s special exhibition for this year.

In the past we have organized special exhibitions introducing Japanese advertising, but this is the very first time we have organized a special exhibition introducing groundbreaking ads of American advertising and the people who created them.

Madison Avenue which runs vertically through Manhattan Island has become synonymous with advertising. The street has housed numerous ad agencies since the beginning of the 20th century and the advertising industry in the US paved its foundations on this street. Many creative talents were born there, some of them becoming legendary creative figures.

In the 1950s and 60s, advertising business at Madison Avenue flourished and those engaged in advertising enjoyed the golden era of advertising. They devised campaigns which led to great successes in the marketing of products and services. They built many brands. They introduced innovative ad campaigns, breaking away from conventional ones. They also made advertising fun and entertaining. They left strong impacts on American culture and influenced the course of American consumption through their creative work.

This exhibition introduces creative people with extraordinary talents and their work which left strong impacts on American culture. Their history spans more than 80 years from the l920’s. Each left a great impact at one time during the history of the American advertising history. They are all induced to the One Club Creative Hall of Fame, the highest honor that creative people can receive.
