Path.1
Artist(s): Boedi WIDJAJA
Date: 14 Sep - 27 Sep 2012

By Boedi Widjaja
Curated by Zarina Muhammad

Path is an ongoing series of works that present the drawing act as live action and performance. Through examining and questioning personal ideas of spatial intervention, alienation and home, the project is indexed and episodic (Path.1, 2, 3, ...), suggesting a serialised narrative of the artist drawing a map of the city as he moves through it.

Having previously lived in 3 different cities and moved 13 times in the past 30+ years, the artist sees the project as a construction of a third place and of making a new place at the same location. Through trans-mapping each of these lived spaces onto the other, the notion of place is understood and perceived as a site that is amorphous, imaginative and malleable: an entity, construct, identity and fantasy all at once.

Each episode of Path suggests a marker in this map of the city. The city is perceived as a place or an entity that reveals competing and conflicting narratives and identities. Path is essentially about inhabiting the city and finding ways to re-connect with it, in spite of its rapidly shifting socio-cultural and visual landscape.

about open call

The Substation's Open Call platform was initiated to support and realise strongly artistic, critical and rigorous proposals for visual, performance and sound art productions. Presented as part of SeptFest, Open Call has been a consistent annual platform for showcasing the work of talented emerging artists. While the final works will be exhibited and performed during SeptFest in September, recipients will be presenting their works-in-progress to the public in July.
