Denise Green - Paintings, Drawings, Photographs
by Sundaram Tagore Gallery
Location: Sundaram Tagore Gallery Chelsea
Artist(s): Denise GREEN
Date: 8 Jan - 21 Feb 2015

Australian-American artist Denise Green, who studied under Mark Rothko and Robert Motherwell, debuts eight new paintings and nine mixed-media works combining photographs and drawings at Sundaram Tagore New York.

This new body of work marks a dramatic shift in the artist’s practice, incorporating photography and drawings for the first time. The practice of juxtaposing small- and large-scale photographs and drawings evolved from the artist’s explorations over the past year and has allowed her to produce works that are purely abstract and suffused with energy.
Born in Australia, Denise Green arrived in New York City in 1969. Studying under Rothko and Motherwell at Hunter College, Green established roots in the Western modernist tradition. From her early years in Australia and travels in India she also incorporated an Eastern and Aboriginal aesthetic. Her inclusion in two major exhibitions in 1978, Young American Artists (Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum) and New Image Painting (Whitney Museum of American Art) launched her into the New York art world. She has had more than 110 solo exhibitions and her work has been the subject of nine museum retrospectives in the last fifteen years, including shows at MoMA PS1 in New York (1999), the Art Gallery of New South Wales (2001) and the Museum Kurhaus Kleve in Germany (2006). Her paintings are in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; the Albertina, Vienna; and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney. In 2007 she was awarded the Order of Australia.

Denise Green’s book An Artist’s Odyssey was published by University of Minnesota Press in 2012. Her first book, Metonymy in Contemporary Art: A New Paradigm, in which she developed a new approach to art criticism and creativity inspired by Australian Aboriginal and Indian thought, was released by University of Minnesota Press in 2005.
