Thus and So Rather than Otherwise
by Taka Ishii Gallery
Location: Taka Ishii Gallery Tokyo
Artist(s): Yuki KIMURA
Date: 4 Jul - 1 Aug 2015

Taka Ishii Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition with Yuki Kimura from July 4 to August 1, 2015. The exhibition marks the artist’s seventh solo presentation at Taka Ishii Gallery since her previous gallery showing three years ago.

An enlarged image of a tennis court is printed on a screen that hangs from the ceiling to the floor. There are four such screens, suspended in three separate spaces. Photographs that have been framed respectively from large, medium, to small, are placed in a stack of three on top of a sawhorse. All of the photographs are the same, each capturing an image of stairs. Half-drunk bottles of tequila of the same brand, one large and the other small, sit on a grey marble stand atop a white pedestal. A half mirror stands in the space between the two bottles. Cornice-like panels with a small photograph placed upon one of them, extend vertically from an open attaché case on the floor. There are two of these.

Yuki Kimura was born in 1971 in Kyoto, and currently lives in Berlin. Her work has been featured in exhibitions including; “Photography Will Be”, Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, Nagoya (2014); “Never Enough: Recent Acquisitions of Contemporary Art”, Dallas Museum of Art (2014); “Better Homes”, SculptureCenter, New York (2013); “Cherry Picking”, Karma International, Zurich (2013); 30th São Paulo Biennial (2012); “Mount Fuji does not exist”, Le Plateau / Frac Ile-de-France, Paris (2012); “Kaza Ana / Air Hole: Another Form of Conceptualism from Asia”, The National Museum of Art, Osaka (2011); “MOT Collection: Plastic Memories – to illuminate now“, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (2010); “Roppongi Crossing: New Visions in Contemporary Japanese Art 2004″, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2004); 6th International Istanbul Biennial (1999).
