Suspending World
by Artify Gallery
Location: Artify Gallery
Artist(s): KWONG Wing Kwan
Date: 14 Oct - 22 Nov 2014

Artify Gallery presents the solo exhibition of local artist Kwong Wing Kwan – “Suspending World”. From 14 October to 22 November, 2014, the exhibition invites audiences to observe works inspired by the astronomical configuration of celestial bodies and how these transitions reflect the paradoxes of human existence. In the galaxy natural catastrophes ruin and nurture at the same time. Planets are organized by a framework of symbiotic gravitational relationships. However within these correlation each body negotiates for a leading position whilst maintaining the equilibrium. A metaphor for mundane human struggle with fate.

In continuation of her solo exhibition last year, Kwong investigates human reactions towards the uncertainty of fate. Through comparing galactic phenomena to real life, the artist notices that the illusion of our free will often overlooks the role of fate behind our decisions. The artist is fascinated by the way black holes annihilate and nurture Space simultaneously, as well as the our fight in the seemingly doomed war against destiny.

Using “hands” as a symbol of “control”, the series feature both monochrome and works with colourful dyed backgrounds. Together forming scenes of “Controlling planets” , the works are rich in metaphors and symbols while discussing the delicate relationship between man and destiny. The marbling technique used, tread the fine line between the controllable and the uncontrollable, reflecting the artist’s aesthetic choice as well as the paradoxical nature of the subject discussed. Featured artwork Leading Satellite is a spinning installation, mimicking sensations of the “motion VS stillness” paradox.  In describing her research Kwong concludes “the world is more complex than the obvious facts.”
