Dao Gives Birth to One - Hung Keung Exhibition
by Chinese Arts Centre
Location: Chinese Arts Centre
Artist(s): HUNG Keung
Date: 6 Jul - 1 Sep 2012

Hung Keung is a leading contemporary Chinese media artist. For the exhibition at Chinese Arts Centre, he will be presenting an interactive video project Dao Gives Birth to One – the work won the Achievement Award from Hong Kong Museum of Art, as part of the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Biennial Awards 2009 - 2010.

At the root of Hung's work is a preoccupation with the longevity of Chinese culture. In it he questions how human beings in modern day society engage with the ancient philosophical concept of 'Dao'. This project aims to examine the possibilities of relationships between human beings, Dao, and our universe, through the integration of Chinese calligraphy and new media.

The extensive horizontal view created by the multiple screens in this installation is inspired by traditional scroll paintings, with the white background representing the infinite space of endless time. As well as being visually striking, the piece is technologically sophisticated and incorporates specially designed interactive software. With this piece Hung wishes to provide audiences with a unique, refreshing, and contemporary perspective on traditional Chinese philosophy, painting and calligraphy.

Flip and Fly

A Digital animation workshop of Chinese writing As part of this exhibition, we are offering the exciting opportunity to take part in creating extra work for this interactive video installation alongside the artist, Hung Keung. Join us on 7 July for a special workshop including a gallery tour, artist talk, and activity session with one of China's leading contemporary media artists. Hear more about the exhibition and the artist contemporary perspective on traditional Chinese philosophy, calligraphy and the principle of Chinese characters followed by the opportunity to create your own animated characters, which will become part of the installation.

All participants will be invited back to the centre to see their work showing in the gallery space in a stated period of time in the main gallery space starting from 21 July.

There are only 10 places in this workshop, so we advise booking early to avoid disappointment. The session will run from 11am to 3:30pm with 1 hour lunch break and will take place here at Chinese Arts Centre with also lunch provided.

Participation fee is £7.
