Nganana Wararakatinyi – We are Jumping
by Alcaston Gallery
Location: Alcaston Gallery
Artist(s): David FRANK
Date: 12 May - 6 Jun 2015

Alcaston Gallery is pleased to introduce David Frank to our clients, in his inaugural solo exhibition Nganana Wararakatinyi – We are Jumping.

David Frank lives and works at Iwantja community in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands in far north South Australia. For more than fifteen years he was employed with the South Australian Police Force, and his experiences gained as a police officer provide rich inspiration for his quirky, figurative artworks.

David began painting at Iwantja Arts when he retired from the police force. His paintings present intricate narratives of police life in the desert landscape, effortlessly infused with charm and good humour. Orderly arrangements of police figures appear running, jumping, playing sports, or balanced in precarious acrobatic positions. With an almost ritual repetition, the motifs of police in uniform and Iwantja locals are dotted across a vast black landscape, creating captivating depictions of contemporary life in the artist’s community.

David Frank has exhibited throughout Australia in group exhibitions, including Desert Mob, Araluen Art Centre, Alice Springs, and Boomalli Art Gallery, Sydney, and in 2015 undertook a residency at Cicada Press, University of New South Wales Art & Design. Alcaston Gallery is delighted to welcome David to our artist stable.
