Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke was established in Mumbai in 2006 by Usha Mirchandani and her daughter Ranjana Steinruecke. Mirchandani had dealt in Indian contemporary art since the mid-1980s, and in 2003 she curated a major retrospective of the work of Bhupen Khakhar at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai. Steinruecke ran a gallery in Berlin from 1997 to 2003, presenting solo exhibitions with, amongst others, Bhupen Khakhar, Atul Dodiya, Jogen Chowdhury, M.F. Husain and S.H. Raza.

Now located in a pristine 2000 square foot space just behind the Taj Mahal Hotel in Colaba, in the heart of Mumbai’s art district, the gallery represents a portfolio of eight young and mid-career artists, who bring a highly individualized sensibility to Indian contemporary art. The artists work in diverse media including painting (Jyothi Basu, Abir Karmakar, Ratheesh T. and Sarika Mehta), photography and video (Tejal Shah, Mansi Bhatt), jute collage (Manish Nai) and large-format charcoal drawing (Aji V.N.).

The gallery has played a leading role in bringing an international vibrancy to Mumbai’s art scene, showing for the first time in India the work of artists such as Kiki Smith, Jonathan Meese, and Polly Apfelbaum.
