Withdrawn

Location: Taksu Kuala Lumpur
Artist(s): GAN Tee Sheng
Date: 8 May - 24 May 2014

TAKSU KL presents ‘Withdrawn’, a solo debut by Gan Tee Sheng.

Gan Tee Sheng (b. 1984 Kluang, Malaysia, Dasein Academy of Art graduate in Fine Arts and winner of the UOB painting competition and Malaysian Emerging Artist Award (MEAA) 2011) makes his solo entrance at TAKSU KL with a body of work that centres on a much-overlooked subject matter. The artist ‘withdraws’ unnamed strangers from the streets of Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown and places them into focus as painterly examinations of the figure. They serve as the artist’s attempt at reconnecting us with the people in society that deserve a better look. The artist’s modus operandi has been to approach the figure along the route of realism, but with slight detours by way of grittier touches – the ‘unfinished’ or ‘disappearing edges’ of each figure is meant to project the existence of his subjects. In these paintings, Gan has brought these many unnamed individuals to life with expressive brushwork that pays homage to the fleshy contours found in the works of British painters, Jenny Saville and Lucien Freud. And, whilst the artist’s works channel our thoughts towards the older segment of society that often goes unnoticed, Gan’s solo exhibition isn’t merely an exercise in looking outwards – the exhibition also presents a deep study of the personal.
