Guris, Fauzulyusri's new suite of paintings and lino-prints, follows his long preoccupation with mark-making and the way a line can imbue character or spirit in a painting. Largely an exhibition of portraits - an artist, a couple, a friend and fellow artists - Fauzul moves us beyond traditional understandings of 'portraiture' to embrace the surface that surrounds the sitter. Here he embeds details within the painting's surface - a little like a tattoo scratched into the skin - where its design, colour and lines increasingly become the subject. It is a exciting take on contemporary identity and the role of painting today.
