Three Worlds 7 (2008) by Phaptawan SUWANNAKUDT
135 x 65 cm
Acrylic on canvas

I later developed the use of writing text as a medium to process work as to observe wakeful moment in the practice of Buddhist meditation in work Casting off a Memory and other works in the same period. The form has become a tool I used as to observe and apply in cultural context, the environment unaccustomed to me.

The writing in the work Three Worlds refer to the text from Traibhumikatha: the story of the three planes of existence by King Lithai written in 14th century. It is the narrative of cosmic structure in the Thai belief. The description of the three worlds is basically the lead to Buddhist practice which will ultimately get you out of the Samsara and attain enlightenment. Known among Thai as Traiphum Prarewg, it is believed to be among the oldest book in Thailand and has been widely referred to in the arts literature, dance, drama, and visual arts. The process of this series work involves layers of writing the text on top of each other as well as on top of motifs and icons referred to in the narrative of the text including Australian trees, architecture and figures. The process also involves masking and peeling off, adding and erasing which is the tool I use in exploration of my practice in between both of my home countries Thailand and Australia.
