Over the past two decades Vadehra Art Gallery (VAG) has been actively promoting contemporary Indian art through exhibitions, retrospectives and publications. Set up in 1987, we are today one of the premier art galleries in India, both in terms of the shows we organize and the artists we are associated with. These are India’s finest artists from different generations whose practices point to the sheer range and diversity of the modern and contemporary Indian art practice. Over the past twenty years VAG has been the locus through which the works of these artists have reached the public.

In addition to advancing art in the private arena, we are dedicated to making art available to the community-at-large. In a country like India, where a vibrant and comprehensive art museum culture is as yet not available, we have paved the way for an active collaboration of the private and public sector. We were the first to work in partnership with the National Gallery of Modern Art to organize retrospectives of renowned artists like Ram Kumar, Raghu Rai, Devyani Krishna, A Ramachandran, SH Raza and Benodebehari Mukherjee.

We were also the first in India to go into art publishing in a systematic way in 1996. We have published twelve books so far that range from monographs on artists, to books on art making techniques, to picture books and finally a comprehensive art directory. We have another eleven books in the pipeline and all these publications have provided the art world with wonderful insights on Indian art.

In February 2006 we had the first-ever Picasso exhibition to be held in a private gallery in India, in collaboration with Grosvenor Gallery, London, the success of which demonstrated that India has indeed become a destination for the international art world.  We have taken this partnership forward by opening Grosvenor Vadehra Gallery in London, a collaboration between Grosvenor Gallery and Vadehra Art Gallery for the promotion of international art within India, and Indian art within the UK.
