Sensory Spaces 4 by Liu Wei opens at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, The Netherlands today. Sensory Spaces is a series of commissioned solo projects in which artists are invited to respond to the architectural qualities of the space, emphasizing notions of transformation and surprise. The work of artist Liu Wei deals with China’s rapid modernization and urban growth. Addressing the power structures and dynamism of urban society, he uses the physical materials from which the city is built, placing enlarged elements that are both building blocks and sculptures in the exhibition space. They refer to construction, decay, possibilities, and utopias. Their scale and materiality also enter into a dialogue with the museum’s concrete architecture. Liu Wei is the fourth artist invited to participate in the museum’s Sensory Spaces exhibition series.
