Lehmann Maupin (Booth K15) is participating in Art Basel Miami Beach featuring works by Billy Childish, Tracey Emin, Teresita Fernández, Liu Wei, OSGEMEOS, Alex Prager, Robin Rhode, Do Ho Suh, and Mickalene Thomas.
In conjunction with Tracey Emin’s first solo museum exhibition in the United States, Angel Without You at the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, Lehmann Maupin will feature Emin’s works in a dedicated Art Kabinett at Art Basel Miami Beach. Among the works on view by the British artist will be a group of bronze sculptures adorned with tiny, hand-sculpted animal and human figures and engraved with poetic confessions. Alongside the sculptures will be self-portraits from Emin’s Lonely Chair drawing series and a new neon wall piece, The Passion of Your Smile. Together these works poignantly capture the artist’s range of emotions from longing and loneliness to love and desire. Emin will also participate in a talk as part of the fair’s Salon 2013 programming on Thursday, December 5 at 6 PM within the fair at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
Additional highlights of Lehmann Maupin’s presentation at Art Basel Miami Beach include new works by Teresita Fernández, Liu Wei, Alex Prager, Robin Rhode, Do Ho Suh, and Mickalene Thomas. Fernández’s Ghost (Vines) is an expansive stainless steel wall sculpture in which the artist continues to explore perception and the act of viewing. In May 2014 Fernández will open a major solo exhibition, As Above So Below, at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams, which will present a vibrant and immersive installation including a range of new works from her recent investigations into gold as a precious metal.
Liu Wei, who will be featured in the exhibition 28 Chinese opening at the Rubell Family Collection and Contemporary Arts Foundation in Miami during Art Basel Miami Beach, will show a selection of wall sculptures from his Jungle series in Lehmann Maupin’s booth. Considered to be one of the most progressive and original Chinese artists to have emerged on the international art scene, Liu utilizes basic industrial materials as poetic commentary on the changing social and political climates of his homeland China.
Also on view will be a new work from Alex Prager’s Face in the Crowd series, currently featured in her solo museum exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. though March 9, 2014. Prager’s Face in the Crowd Film Strip #1 assembles a selection of stills from the artist’s elaborately constructed film of the same title, which explores the duality of individual and group narratives within a crowd and the emotional and psychological affects that result from being immersed within a group of people. The artist will open her first exhibition with Lehmann Maupin, New York on January 9, 2014.
Robin Rhode, whose first museum show dedicated to his animations opens at the Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase, New York, in May 2014, will present a selection of digital animations along with the new photographic work titled 1984. In this work, Rhode playfully explores the underlying themes from George Orwell’s classic novel in order to recontextualize the economic and socio-political issues of today, and he uses the United States quarter as a poetic symbol of the art market and American Dream.
A new work from Do Ho Suh’s ongoing series Specimen Series: 348 West 22nd Street, Apt. A, New York, NY 10011, USA will also be featured in the booth. Through the translucent fabric replica of a stove from his New York apartment, Suh explores the idea of home, memory and our relationship with personal and domestic space. His latest collection of fabric sculptures are currently on view at Lehmann Maupin Hong Kong, and a new monumental installation inaugurated the grand opening of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul in November.
Additionally, Hernan Bas is currently presenting an installation entitled A Queer and Curious Cabinet at the Bass Museum of Art as part of the group exhibition Time, on view through February 24, 2014. The exhibition presents a selection of historical and contemporary artworks, objects and artists’ projects that engage with concepts of time. Based on historical cabinets of curiosities, Bas has created a cabinet room to display a wide range of objects he has collected over a number of years. Some of these artifacts once would have been quite common, but have become rare curios with the passage of time. Mickalene Thomas will also show her award-winning short film Happy Birthday to a Beautiful Woman as part of the Art Basel Miami Beach Film Sector. The screening will take place on Wednesday, December 4 at 9 PM at the New World Center.
