Ai Ryumon (Oil painting) and Keiko Masumoto(Ceramic) Group Exhibition - Mélange -
by Imura Art Gallery Location: Imura Art Gallery
Artist(s): Ai RYUMON, Keiko MASUMOTO
Date: 6 Aug - 28 Aug 2010
imura art gallery is proud to present the Ai Ryumon and Keiko Masumoto Group show 'Mélange'.
Ai Ryumon uses oil paint to portray the female fashion of her generation, characterised in her striking paintings with bold compositions of vibrant colours.
This masks a somewhat dark sense of humour, easily over looked on first viewing.
In contrast, Keiko Masumoto is a ceramicist. Ceramics on display in the domestic setting have their decorative role promoted at the loss of their functional role.
Keiko Masumoto, however, boldly mixes Japanese traditional and decorative motifs to produce an alternative way of looking at these objects.
The two Artists have certain points of similarity, in that they create new Art objects
by combining and contrasting figures and images from the fashion and ceramics worlds, each of which already have their own formal language.
One can at once appreciate the novelty and surprising combination of humour and cruelty, resulting from the juxtaposition of Japanese cultural miscellany and the depth and mystery that is the aesthetic sense of Japan.
