Facade
by Kodama Gallery Kyoto
Location: Kodama Gallery Kyoto
Artist(s): Mayuko WADA
Date: 19 Oct - 23 Nov 2013

Gallery Kodama is pleased to present the solo exhibition 'Facade' of Mayuko Wada. Wada has had own perspective that 'image' without corporeality occurring to his mind is expressed in art as an object. Last year, he has participated in 'Real Japanesque' at The National Museum of Art Osaka and 'Contemporary Art of Today' at Hyōgo Prefectural Museum of Art, and this year, announced the solo exhibition at Kodama Gallery in Tokyo with the group exhibition 'VOCA2013' at The Ueno Royal Museum. This exhibition is to announce the new works with two stages of new concept.

To understand Wada's work, there are three keywords; image, 'solid' or 'plane' and 'picture'.

Firstly, 'image' is 'figure' coming into head. As specifying the 'figure', Wada pursues it through creating the art work. To Wada, yacht, horse, bird, airplane and brick building are easy and ordinary motif to bring into mind but these are easy to compare with the audience's sense or conception so that Wada's unique idea can be emphasized.

Secondly, for 'solid' and 'plane' art works, as reconsidering their definition, an important point of his identity can be found. To Wada, 'solid' work doesn't mean that the form is multi-dimensional, but even though our view is flat, if solid structure can be recreated then it is 'solid' work. It is same as 'plane' work. Wada tries to transform concreteness of motif into dynamics of material but not use its solid characteristics.

'Picture' is the image drawn on plane but 'image' in Wada's mind is not showed in general pictorial expression, such as perspective or shading. However, Wada tries to what his expression is through comparing it to definition of 'picture'.

In this exhibition, he works based on basic concept, embodying the 'image' in his work. From the view 'frontally' of the 'image', Wada draws a new analysis in terms of essential of his work.
