The feminine figures are stylized, rendered in earthy tones of red, brown and white, disarmingly beautiful. Their often deformed shapes only make them appear more ethereal.
Zheng Yu Kui received his formal training from the Shandong Academy of Light Industry & Fine Arts and furthered his studies at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. His creations received popular acclaim in Europe during sojourn there in the year 2004.
A recipient of awards including the prize in ’90 Shandong Pottery and Porcelain Contest for Panlong Xi Jiu (Nine Unusual Dragon Pot), Zheng’s sculptures proclaim his individual flair in creating in the age-old medium of pottery. The subjects are often women, seen in traditional garb, engaged in leisure activities, invariably depicted in joyous moods.
Mulan Gallery features a well-reputed collection of some of his signature works from the series Shanghai Sisters, Fatty Family, Fei Fei to the rotund Han Mei. Each individual piece is remarkable and stands out for its beauty and grace. Zheng’s oeuvre has most definitely won the admiration of critics and commentators with its wit, artistic sensibility and nuanced compositions.
