InsideOut III - Photography by Migrant Workers
by Societe Generale Gallery at Alliance Française de Singapour
Location: Upper and Lower Foyer
Date: 2 Jul - 23 Jul 2010

No child dreams of becoming a maid or a construction worker. But driven by poverty and a lack of opportunities, waves of Asians take on such work every year. In Singapore, migrant workers build our infrastructure, clean our homes and help raise our children. But we know little of their stories and the dreams that inspire them.

InsideOut is a project that aims to allow the audience to see Singapore through the eyes of migrant workers to foster mutual understanding.

First launched in 2006 in conjunction with the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival, this is the 3rd edition of InsideOut. Volunteer photographers guided migrant workers on using photography to document their daily lives, meeting once a week over three months for lessons and guided field shoots.

Armed with basic digital cameras, the participating migrant workers embraced the opportunity to show a slice of their lives and Singapore from their perspective.Through the images, we hope to provide a platform for creative dialogue and to humanize the perception of migrant workers in Singapore.

InsideOut was made possible by the enthusiastic pool of volunteers: Asra Aman, Deanna Ng, Jonathan Loh, Loh Meng Wai, Reuben Raj, Lim Yaohui, Muhammad Khairi, and the support of the Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics (HOME).

Participating migrant workers for this project included: Ananthan D , Audrey, Eny Susilowati, Fe, Fitri, Joseph Rasu Aruldaj, Lovelin, Kannan S., Kainthandar, Milagros, Mustaqiroh Abdullah, Nur Abidah Binti Basri, Mary, Mohammed Bazlur Rahman, Roslyn, Saravanan S., Shumugum R., Vijay D, Venkadesh, Zarhnineie, Zhou Guang Hua, Tukinah Sanropingi.
