Westmark who currently lives and works in Gainesville, Florida, grew up in Brewton, a small town in Alabama. After obtaining his BFA from Kansas City Art Institute he went on to pursue and obtained his MFA from the University of Florida. Ever since, Westmark has set himself apart as an artist with a distinct voice and vocabulary.
By using ordinary paper sewing patterns to depict abstract concepts, he creates a unique dialectic between the hard reality of engineering and the ethereal quality of his subject matter.
John Westmark's work explores the relationship between man and machine; engineering and art; reality and myths.
Exuding power and pageantry, Westmark's works have resonated with collectors, critics and curators, earning him a position on the watch lists of museums and institutions, not to mention numerous awards. Most recently he was awarded Artist-in-Residence, Bemis Center for Contemporary Art for Summer 2010 and Artist-in-Residence, Altos De Chavon Cultural Center, Dominican Republic.
