Artworks from younger artists are usually written off by more prestigious galleries who have a stable of established artists that they prefer to spend more time marketing and organizing shows for since that makes for profitable business.

Nevertheless, when presented with good works of art, credit must be given when credit is due. Three outstanding young artists from three different locations spanning Singapore, Taiwan and Japan are hand picked and put together in this exceptional group show in August.

The talents, all under 30 years of age will be presenting their best figurative works ranging from the human form to animals such as rhinoceros and fishes, in colors that are subtle and somber in tone to colors that come together to contrast with each other in bursts of neons.

However the artists choose to present their works in terms of subjects painted or artistic style, the unifying mood of the exhibition is one of joy tinged with sadness, or perhaps it is the other way around – first comes the happiness and then melancholy. It is uncanny to have all three artists, despite their physical geographic dislocation, explore the same bittersweet experience and presenting it on a higher level in their art.

One cannot help but wonder if the works are a series of self-portraits, where the artists, all three of them, unconsciously put themselves into the characters that they paint, reviewing and dealing with their emotions, experiences and desires. For the generation that is too fast to live and too young to die, perhaps this exhibition is a good opportunity to pause and retrieve, recollect and reflect before life passes by too quickly again.
